If the thought of "girl groups" conjures up images of '50s doo-wop and bubblegum rock, it's time to meet the future. Described as a cross between B-52s, Joni Mitchell, and

Betty

Parliament Funkadelic with a definite tech edge, the New York trio Betty (who performed at the 1993 Lesbian-Gay March on Washington) creates a strangely delightful, uniquely joyous harmonic hybrid that is

earning rave reviews with every new endeavor.

Limboland, Betty's latest release and their first in national distribution, is a bold and playful mix, both in musical style and media presentation. The disc is an "enhanced" CD, meaning in has both music and computer information on it. In an ordinary CD player, you get just the format you expect, with pulsing dance tracks, beautifully orches-

trated ballads in tight three-part harmony, and even a cool cover of the 1960s Association hit "Windy." If, however, you pop Limboland into your PC's CD-ROM drive, be prepared to experience "Virtual Limbo." You'll get videos, live concert footage and interviews.

While the programs on Limboland are more than

a bit resource-hungry (don't try it with less than 12 megabytes of RAM), and the instructions are mushy at best, the novel fun of Limboland Enhanced was worth the effort. Particularly impressive was the multimedia performance piece "Pins and Needles."

Betty's musical flavor arises from the widely differing styles in which trio members are rooted. Sisters Amy and Elizabeth Jiff, a classically trained musician and a sharp-edged rocker, join with jazz and blues musician Alyson Palmer to create a deliciously alluring sound that blends the best of all worlds.

With their Limboland release, Betty is on the fast track. Prepare for the ride. ✔
